Experience the thrill of a single electron racing through a circuit at mind-boggling speeds! The wild ride begins immediately with two sets of bells creating an invigorating metallic backdrop. The intensity continues until a blackout occurs without warning, shutting down power to the entire circuit. The simple effect of a water gong creates the effect of a machine grinding to a halt. The circuit soon becomes live again as the electron races on. Absolutely stunning!
About FJH Young Band
Appropriate for middle school and smaller high school groups. Second clarinets usually stay below the break. Parts are written with more independence, and instrumentation increases slightly. There is still adequate doubling in the lower voices. Grades 2 - 2.5

Electricity by Brain Balmages
Electricity is a fast and exciting piece that bands grades 8 and 9 would enjoy. The song is mainly in 3/4, but often switches to 4/4 about 3 or 4 times. Counting is definitely essential here if you want to play it well. The rhythms are pretty basic, but the amount of rests and counting in this song make it a challenge. The song starts off at 160 BPM, but at the blackout of the song it drops all the way to 72 BPM. The key is concert C minor. Basically, for the first half of the song, it's fast paced and suspenseful. Then, suddenly everyone immediately stops playing. The clarinets enter, playing a soft, but melancholy melody. Then after the blackout is over, the song returns to its original tempo and finishes off with a huge end. I played this song this year in my 8th grade band class, and it was a challenge, but the turnout was well worth it. Overall, Electricity is an excellent choice for the directors out there debating for a piece for their band. Just be prepared to count!
