This is my fourth violin concerto, after ...prisme / incidences... (1998, dedicated to the violinist Hae-Sun Kang), Paysages avec figures absentes - Nachlese IV (2010, premiered by Isabelle Faust) and Des nuages et des brouillards, (2016, for Ilya Gringolts).
Dedicated to Renaud Capuçon, 4 Eindrücke (Four Im pressions) was commissioned by the Suntory Hall in Tokyo, the Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire and by the Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne. Its first performance was given on 30th August 2019 by Capuçon with the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra conducted by Pascal Rophé.
For me, composing a concerto is writing for and getting to know a specific artist. The piece becomes a sort of portrait. Therefore, automatically, I have treated the violin in a different way in each of my four concertos.
This one is in four movements. The first is highly virtuosic and dynamic. The second movement starts off in the orchestra, which establishes a regular semiquaver motion using a variety of playing techniques, with the soloist playing only pizzicato. The third movement is slow, and ends with an unhurried melody around the note E. The last movement returns to the virtuosity of the first, leading to the final climax.

Konzert für Violine und Orchester
Dies ist mein viertes Violinkonzert nach ...prisme / incidences... (1998, der Violinistin Hae-Sun Kang gewidmet), Paysages avec figures absentes - Nachlese IV (2010, von Isabelle Faust uraufgeführt) und Des nuages et des brouillards (2016, für Ilya Gringolts). Das Renaud Capuçon gewidmete Werk wurde gemein sam von der Suntory Hall in Tokio, dem Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire und dem Gürzenich-Orchester in Köln in Auftrag gegeben - seine Uraufführung fand am 30. August 2019 durch Renaud Capuçon und das Tokyo Symphony Orchestra unter der Leitung von Pascal Rophé statt.
Ein Konzert zu komponieren bedeutet für mich, für einen bestimmten Künstler zu schreiben, den ich näher kennenlerne. Das Stück wird zu einer Art Portrait. Aus diesem Grund habe ich die Violine in jedem der vier Konzerte automatisch unterschiedlich behandelt.
Das Konzert hat vier Sätze. Der erste ist sehr virtuos und dynamisch. Das Orchester eröffnet den zweiten Satz, der von speziellen Spieltechniken und einer gleichmäßigen Sechzehntelbewegung geprägt ist, während der Solist außchließlich pizzicato spielt. Der dritte, langsame Satz endet mit einer bedächtigen Melodie mit dem Zentralton E. Der letzte Satz greift auf die Virtuosität des ersten zurück und mündet in einen finalen Höhepunkt.
