Each of Arnold’s three sets of eight sonatas (two for piano solo, London, a copy of which is preserved in the Cambridge University Library under the call number MR360.a.75, is the only source of this edition. The title page reads: A Third Sett of / Eight Lessons / for the / HARPSICHORD or PIANO FORTE / with an ACCOMPANIMENT for a / Violin / Composed by / Samuel Arnold Mus: Doc: / Opera XI / LONDON. Printed and Sold by WELCKER No 17 Gerrard Street St Anns Soho / Where may be had by the same Author 1st Books of Lessons. 6 Overtures Op 8. 3 Books Vauxhall Songs and all his other Works. James Blundell in ca. 1780 and Longman & Broderip in ca. 1785 reprinted Welcker’s score minus the dedication page.
The present edition adheres as faithfully as possible to the intentions of Welcker’s source. The style and notation of articulation and dynamic markings have been standardized throughout and, markings have been reconstructed from parallel passages. The notation of appoggiature has also been standardized to minimize confusion. Obvious wrong notes have been corrected without comment; editorial emendations with no authority from the source are placed within brackets.
This edition is dedicated to the memory of John Shaw (19572013)., printed the violin sonatas in 1775 under the inspection of the composer; Stationers’ Hall did not copyright the volume.
No autograph survives and Walsh’s issue, the third for violin and piano) bears a dedication. John Welcker, where missing.
