In the musical Captain Georg von Trapp sings the song to his family when he rediscovers music with his children. Later on, he sings it with his family as a good-bye to their beloved Austrian homeland. It is a lilting, gentle folk song in 3/4 waltz-time. This version for strings is rather unadorned and unassuming - like unto the delicate beauty of the edelweiss flower. Sometimes, less is more - or just enough.
