One of the most unique carols goes a bit beyond the hymnal page to a true echo that can be performed antiphonally side to side or platform to balcony/gallery.
The first stanzas are for choir followed by overlapping echo. Then, the echo choir gets it opportunity to sing as if far away, but in a more lyrical style. The main choir then picks up again, the echo rejoins and all team up for an easily fielded key change, brief but strong canon and a dramatic ending that includes a final comment from the echo!
