Cantor, congregation, organ
SKU: C5.3033
Composed by Alex Hill. Text: Lectionary. English setting of the Easter Sequence. Easter. Published by CanticaNOVA Publications (C5.3033).
Victimae paschali laudes is the beginning of the Latin-texted sequence for Easter Sunday. The chant melody is a masterpiece of concise yet pictorial language and has inspired composers throughout the centuries -- even the great German chorale, "Christ lag in Todesbanden," was derived from its melody. Alex Hill, a lover of chant himself, has taken this marvelous melody and interpreted the poem in a wholly liturgical way. His English translation is set in two versions (Cantor Version & Festival Version) and remains faithful to the original chant melody in the refrain ("Praises to the Paschal Victim...") and the verses. The Cantor Version is set for cantor or unison choir, congregation and organ. The Festival Version uses brass quartet (trpt 1, trpt 2, trbn 1, trbn 2), SATB choir, cantor, congregation and organ. The congregational refrain is identical in both versions. This exciting piece is the perfect way to add festivity to the glorious Easter Sunday liturgy!
