Andrew Motyka, Director of Music at the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul in Indianapolis IN, uses the beautiful Gregorian chant Alleluia from the Easter Vigil for the basis of his Easter Alleluia. The chant melody is metricized in 4/4 meter for the refrain, making it easy for the cantor and congregation to sing. In addition to cantor and congregation, the piece is scored for SATB choir and organ with optional brass quintet (Trpt 1, Trpt 2, Horn, Trbn, Tuba). After a brass fanfare (playable on organ in the absense of brass), the cantor intones the Alleluia refrain, repeated by the congregation with choral harmonies. The three Lectionary verses from Psalm 118 are set for SATB choir: 1.Give thanks to the Lord... / 2.The right hand of the Lord... / 3.The stone which the builders rejected... The vocal ranges for these verses are quite comfortable, and in fact, the soprano line (only reaching D-flat) could easily be sung by any cantor, making a cantor/congregation option possible. The Score/Vocal edition (3038) contains all the music - brass lines, cantor part, SATB choir lines and organ. The instrumental Parts (3038-p) contains seven pages: a part for Trumpet 1 in C and B-flat, Trumpet 2 in C and B-flat, Horn, Trombone and Tuba. Easter Alleluia is a great way to maintain the traditional chant melody in a style easily accessible to the congregation. The flexible formats [cantor/ congregation/organ -or- adding SATB choir -or- adding brass quintet] makes this appealing in many varied situations.
