Ewazen found himself truly a captive audience to three trombonist friends during a winter blizzard. While the storm raged outside and the trombonists played through their repertoire, Ewazen was inspired to write Eaglehawk for these very forces, in memory of the moment. For intermediate to advanced._______________________________________Text on the scanned back cover:Eaglehawk for Three TrombonesWhile a guest at the home of James Lebens, an intense blizzard left Ewazen snowbound on a small island near Quebec City, with three trombonists. While the musicians kept busy reading through trios, Ewazen composed EAGLEHAWK for them. This 3-minute work (for 2 tenor trombones and 1 bass) is fiery and syncopated, soaring like birds of prey.
On December 11, 2004, I was a guest at the home of my great friend James Lebens, the trombone professor at Laval University in Quebec City, where we had just performed a recital of my brass music. With two other friends and trombone colleagues fromthe Cathedral Bluffs Symphony in Toronto (Tony Ellis and Bob Brown), we became snowbound during an intense blizzard on the Ile d’Orleans where Jim’s home is situated. As the spectacular storm raged outside and the three trombonists beganplaying through trombone trios, I was inspired to write a trombone trio myself! The beautiful resonance of the sound of the trombones echoing through the house, and the strong winds outside influenced this piece written completely that day and night. In terms of the title EAGLEHAWK, the Ile d’Orleans, an island very near Quebec City in the St. Lawrence, is home to some wonderful fauna – deer and Canadian geese, and all sorts of other birds, including birds of prey. EAGLEHAWK is not one of those! It is actually a nice Australian red wine that we were imbibing while that storm raged, and those birds were soaring above the wintry landscape. Here’s to EAGLEHAWK!!
