Bearbeitet für 2 Kontrabässe. Composed by Johann Matthias Sperger. Arranged by Klaus Trumpf. Score. 20 + 2 x 8 pages. Friedrich Hofmeister Musikverlag #FH 3641. Published by Friedrich Hofmeister Musikverlag (HF.FH-3641).
ISBN 9790203436416. 9 x 12 inches.
Johann Matthias Sperger composed this duet around 1796. He likely wrote the viola part for the violist Grindler (first name unknown), for whom he probably also composed the highly virtuosic "Viola Concerto" and the "Concertino" with a solo viola – and the double bass part for himself. In this three-movement work, Sperger displays his incredible imagination in relatively simple tonic-dominant harmony – with brief excursions into the subdominant and, in the interesting arpeggio passages, into more distant harmonies – and in the slow middle movement, also in a minor key section. His ideas, especially in the two outer movements, sparkle with virtuosity, variety, melodic richness, and surprises. This model of one of the first viola-double bass duets ever composed inspired me to create a classic duet for two double basses. All passages, arpeggios, etc., of the original viola part have been transposed unchanged to the corresponding, conveniently located double bass range. The level of difficulty demands virtuoso mastery in both parts.
