DUE – for Violin and Double Bass Original composition by Giuseppe Finizio
“DUE” is a contemporary chamber work for violin and double bass, written using a twelve-tone (dodecaphonic) system as a structural framework rather than a purely academic constraint.
The two instruments engage in a tense and asymmetric dialogue: the violin unfolds fragmented, questioning melodic gestures, often suspended and searching, while the double bass provides a more physical and grounded counterpoint, articulated through wide intervals and rhythmic weight. Rather than imitation, the interaction is based on contrast and complementarity, creating a continuously shifting balance between the two voices.
Despite the rigor of the serial technique, the piece avoids cold abstraction. Expressive tension, moments of suspension, and brief points of convergence give the music a strong emotional dimension, allowing the dodecaphonic language to remain fluid and communicative.
“DUE” explores instability as a poetic space, where two distinct musical identities coexist without resolution, generating a concentrated and intense listening experience.
