The work, composed in January 2022, aims to offer the audience a journey through the past, as expressed by its romani title. Its first movement is written in evocation of the Baroque aesthetic. The performer must demonstrate impeccable technique when facing a melody that begins with long pedal notes and requires rhythmic and timbral balance in the toccata which, with barely a moment to breathe, carries the melody toward the final cadence.

The second movement transports the listener to the echoes of the Viennese salons of the 19th century and their everlasting waltzes. Intertwined with them is the Russian tradition, linked through the waltz to that historical moment when grand festivities flourished.

In the final movement, the journey continues eastward through old Europe, reaching Hungary. A melody in the form of a rondo with a Romani fragrance. The different themes introduce a virtually uninterrupted challenge that showcases a wide range of highly demanding technical resources for the violinist—from rapid scales and arpeggios to double, triple, and quadruple stops, left-hand pizzicatos, modulations, and contrasting nuances. All framed within the aroma of Gypsy folk music so greatly appreciated by musicians such as Bartók or Benny Goodman.

The entire composition is tied together by the rich sonority of open strings and the tonal axis provided by the exposed fifths (particularly D–A). It is a composition where melody reigns as the summit of expression, with obligatory rhythmic precision and an absence of “modern” artifices. Its difficulty lies precisely in its clear yet deceptive simplicity. I hope it is music worthy of being heard and enjoyed by the audience but, above all, by the performer himself.
