Anton Bruckner is voornamelijk bekend om zijn monumentale symfonieën, maar voordat hij over het meesterschap beschikte om deze kathedralen van klank op te zetten, bekwaamde hij zich in het schrijven van kleine miniaturen. Ze nemen slechts een bescheiden plaats in tussen al het grote werk van de meester, maar het zijn de eerste zelfstandige symfonische werken van de jonge Anton Bruckner. Ze werden alle vier geschreven in 1862, toen hij compositie studeerde bij Otto Kitzler. In deze vroege werken is echter zijn gevoel voor klankrijkdom en instrumentatie reeds te herkennen.

Anton Bruckner is chiefly famous because of his monumental symphonies, yet, before he got the mastery to realize those sound cathedrals he wrote numerous small musical miniatures. They only occupy a small place in the master’s large catalogue but they are the first autonomous symphonic compositions of young Anton Bruckner. These Three Sketches and March in D minor were written in 1862, while he was studying composition with Otto Kitzler. In these early works one can already recognize his gift for creating rich sounds and his orchestration skill.
