This piece was composed for the Filigree Group for my final project in my second year of composition at the ANU. I decided to write a piece in the style of a Celtic waltz with the use of functional and non-functional harmony to give it a more modern spin. I usually begin a composition for an ensemble by writing out a piano sketch with chords and a melody to outline the scaffolding of the piece and this is the first step that I took. I mainly used triads for the harmony and then used chord extensions in the melody such as the 9th and #11th to add some nice colours to the music. I settled on an ABA structure and in my recent compositions I have been using elements from both the A and B section to compose the final A section. Doing this creates a nice combination of all the elements that have been heard previously, and in this case, I use the melody from the A section and combine it with the chord progression from the B section.
