Great purchase

Overall these short pieces are excellent for introducing any pianist to the 12-tone language. Their expressions are varied and are lots of fun to learn - each piece is 12 bars long.Great clear print also.Worth every penny!

Excellent pieces

This is a wonderful early piece. All 12 are playable. Some are studious emulations of Webern and Schoenberg, but they hold up very well, mainly because each one is a intense compression of some mode that Boulez had identified in the modernist practices of the moment. Each piece is exaclty 12 bars long, which is itself an astonishing self-imposed restriction, an a fitting emblem of what Babbitt later called total serialization. It would be possible to catalog most, or all, of the twelve pieces by showing what they truncate and intensify in other composers practices. I think that number 10, Mcanique et trs sec, is a parody of Weberns dryness.Number 4 is the most inhumanly precise of all. The left hand doesnt change: it repeats the same one-bar motif 12 times. The right hand plays a series of extraordinary syncopated variations or counterpoints. Wonderful music.
