Don Carlos
This is a very important edition of this opera. FIrstly, it contains ALL THE MUSIC Verdi wrote, no missing scenes (like in most of the five act versions out there, the first scene in the forest is missing), contains all the music that was cut after the first night (which includes a great trio whose theme was later used as the lacrimosa in the Requiem), etc. It is edited in a way so that you have the original five act version complete as it was originally written, combined with the more famous four act version -- which by the way, Verdi never wrote or worked on -- which really makes seeing how the opera evalved quite an eye-opener. One learns that Eboli's music has many variants to it (not to mention that all her great arias were actually written in four different keys, though the most common keys are used in this edition -- Verdi never really knew who his Eboli was to be, so he wrote it for the first person it was originally written for, in very low keys, which actually remain throughout the rest of the opera, Eboli's music in most all the trios, ensembles, etc. is actually very low, and often not even audible when in performance, as the Ebolis of today are usually th ehigher voice, which he also wrote for as at one time his Eboli was a higher mezzo -- a real journey for that role). There is also a beautiful duet between Elizebeth and Eboli that proceeds the famous "O don Fatale." There is a companion book that goes with this edition, which I haven't yet bought, giving even greater insight to the work, though this set of volumes is the music entirely as he wrote it. It is work the buy, especially for those who want to see just how detailed and involved the original version was intended to be.
