Dom Sebastien

This was an opera that I really knew little about before buying it. I had read that it was not all that popular and I believe it was about one of the last operas that Donizetti wrote (though I am not certain of that point). Berlioz thought it a funeral durge from beginning to end. Well, after playing through the opera, I would beg to differ wth Berlioz. It is a finely constructed opera and well conceived. As with most all critical editions, one is treated with the history, and with variations that happened in performance in various localities. It also contains a wealth of alternate versions of various arias, mostly for the main character. I now wonder what this opera would be like performed. As for overally quality of the product itself, not the opera, it is well bound, paperback, but extremely clearly printed in all aspects.
