Published by Helen Wanders (A0.1685890).Swedish jazz pianist Esbjörn Svensson was born in 1964 and grew up learning classical piano, then switched to jazz in his late teens. He formed the Esbjörn Svensson Trio (e.s.t.) in the early 90s who were popular first in Europe then internationally until Svensson's untimely death in 2008. Their music consisted of classical, rock, pop and techno elements and was largely influenced by classical composer Bela Bartók and rock band Radiohead.
Dodge the Dodo is from their album From Gagarin's Point of View, released in 1999 and written for piano, double bass and drums. This fun, moderately paced and not too difficult arrangement is for bassoon, alto and tenor saxophone, two French horns, two Bb trumpets, two tenor trombones and tuba. It begins with the French horns establishing an accented rhythm, followed by the alto saxophone imitating the drums using key clicks. The main melody is shared among different pairings of the instruments throughout. The middle section's polyphonic-like texture moves the piece toward a climax where all the instruments sonorously come together, then bring the piece to a close.
