The very quiet 1st violin establishes a high-pitched 12-tone row. The rest of the string instruments gradually enter, and with the clarinet entry, the piece ventures off into several distinct sections, each unique, sometimes containing elements of the original row, sometimes containing humorous twists. After the development(s) rise to an intense and unsettling crescendo, the original motif reappears, this time in lovely harmony, with a very quiet conclusion.
