Disuasión (Spanisch for Dissuasion) is a piece for piano four hands where the rhythmic element plays a leading role. Throughout the piece, a rapid and nervous pulse remains constant from beginning to end, in the relatively uncommon asymmetric meter of 7/8.

This constant repetition helps explain the title: when trying to dissuade someone from something, an argument is often repeated insistently, from several different perspectives.

Is Disuasión a tango? I tend to think so, though not a traditional one. Perhaps a Bartókian tango, due to the use of the aforementioned irregular meter plus quartal chords, resources typical of neoclassicism. One could say that, just as Bartók took the folk music of the Balkans and metamorphosed it with classical composition techniques, in this piece I take elements of tango (after all, a kind of "urban folklore") and organize and transform them with contemporary composition techniques.

The result, I believe, preserves the best of both worlds: the drive and energy of Argentine tango, along with the multifaceted depth of classicism.

Although tango dancers accustomed to Troilo, Pugliese, or Canaro will likely be quite surprised.

Disuasión, composed in Worpswede and Bremen (Germany) in 2022, is dedicated to Selma Hande Gade with affection. Its duration is almost 3 minutes.

Today, October 30, 2024, we will hear the world premiere.
