    Great for teaching advanced sightreading

This book is NOT for your average student. You must know what you are getting into. Almost all the pieces use dissonance, whole tone scales, clusters and/or suspended chords. That said this is GREAT for teaching sightreading. Students cannot rely on their ears or on memorized hand positions, they must follow the notes on the page. It is in a style between modernism and post-modernism. If you buy the book with this knowledge and with that intent you won't be disappointed. These are not meant to be recital worthy except Brontosaurus, Brachiosaurus, Pteranodon, and Protoceratops but they give good moods and interesting harmonies.

It's not BAD, it's hip and modern FUN!

    Fantastic for first recitals!

My son played these when he first started to learn the piano. Nothing had gripped his interest until Brontosaurus, which he played at his first recital along with Allosaurus and then surprised his teacher sightreading another one. The pieces are highly expressive while also great for building technique, and they allow a young person to feel what it is like to make music on the piano. Dissonance: young people are open to music of the 20th Century. At the student recitals year after year, half the pupils chose these pieces over a wide variety of other pieces. It's these dinosaurs I thank for getting my son excited about playing the piano! The rest of Bastien I appreciate is very good though I tend to give my beginning pupils Thompson and Dozen a Day books now that I myself teach piano.

    DO NOT BUY!!!

These pieces are just plain ugly. There is no real teaching value in the book, and the annoyingly repetitive dissonance in nearly every piece will drive the teacher and the students' parents crazy. I'm very disappointed in Bastien for publishing something so poorly-written and far below the standard of their other method books.

    Sorry.

I expected some dissonance in the pieces, but this is ridiculous! I'm sorry, James, but I could write better music than this. I really don't know which student to saddle this with. The parents will think the kid is totally playing the wrong keys... Don't buy. Check out Goldston for a better dinosaur book.
