Published by James Strauss (A0.1712216).After World War II, Korngold set his sights on returning to Europe and to writing for the concert stage. In that period he produced the Violin Concerto, the Third String Quartet, and a chamber operetta, Die stumme Serenade (The Silent Serenade). The timing, however, was unkind: interest in his new music had waned, and The Silent Serenade did not receive a performance until 1951—and then only as a shortened radio broadcast.
The score is full of radiant numbers that remained largely unheard. Among the finest is “Ohne Dich,” Silvia’s Act II love song, which echoes Korngold’s sumptuous 1920s style. This new arrangement keeps Korngold’s own piano reduction and refashions the vocal line to take advantage of the violin’s upper register.
