Composed by Johann Strauss Jr. and Ludwig van Beethoven. Arranged by Samuel Wellman. Contemporary. Score. 4 pages. Samuel Wellman #3382551. Published by Samuel Wellman (A0.882119).
Back in the mid-1990s I was at a friend's house, messing around at the piano, when I noticed that Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata (first mvt.) is like the opening of Johann Strauss' Beautiful Blue Danube (in minor of course). Later I wrote a mash-up of the two pieces, starting with the Moonlight, then presenting the main tune of the Strauss. After a bit, the right hand proceeds with all of the waltz tunes in order, while the left hand continues with the Beethoven, including thematic references to the 2nd and 3rd movements, then concluding with the ending material of the 1st movement. So you hear both pieces at once, sort of, but they are in different keys at the same time. Have you ever played a C# chord with both E and E# sounding simultaneously? It's glorious! That's he way my piece ends.
