Josef Strauss, de tweede zoon van Johann Strauss Sr., was eerst werkzaam als ingenieur-architect vooraleer bij te springen als dirigent toen zijn broer Johann Jr. ernstig ziek werd.

Josef Strauß, the second son of Johann Strauß Senior, worked for some time as an architect and engineer before he started conducting to replace his elder brother Johann Junior who had become seriously ill.In 1866 he wrote one of his most succesful polka-mazurka's: Die Libelle (The Dragonfly)

Le second fils de Johann Strauß Père, Joseph Strauß, fit des études d'ingénieur-architecte. C'est pour remplacer son frère aîné Johann fils, terrassé par la maladie, qu'il devint à son tour chef d'orchestre.En 1866 il composait Die Libelle (La Libellule).
