Die Fledermaus (The Bat) is an operetta by Johann Strauss II that tells the story of a series of misunderstandings and revenge that culminate in a night in jail. The story takes place in Vienna on New Year's Eve, 1899. The piece premiered in 1874 and has been popular with audiences ever since.
