Pour Orchestre De Jeunes. Composed by Philippe Hurel. Full score. With Standard notation. Duration 0:04:00. Gerard Billaudot Editeur #576-01584. Published by Gerard Billaudot Editeur (PR.576015840).
Deux Improvisations were composed while two of my children, then very young, attended the Erdeven orchestra Summer course. Premiere Improvisation is a play on texture and colour. More melodic passages are "wave-like" motives and ascending or descending lines that fuel dramatic tension. It is important for performers to blend in very evenly in the overall sonic landscape so that the orchestra sounds like one single instrument, like a large-scale synthesizer. While rhythm is the prominent feature in Deuxième Improvisation, the combination of various instruments into groups is another major factor: Thus, at the beginning of the piece, woodwinds, violins and percussion on the one hand and the two horns, piano, violas and cellos on the other respectively blend into a common timbre. A double process of acceleration and accumulation characterizes the piece until the long final "loop" into which percussion instruments progressively work their way. Absolute precision is essential to create the feeling of an animated machine.
