Contemporary Classical, solo piano piece for Grade 4-5 intermediate/advanced players.

‘Detour’ is a lively piece in the key of D major. The Left hand harmony is based on the primary chords of the key and the piece uses rhythmic interplay between the hands to create interesting patterns and a feeling of forward motion.

Key Techniques

• Rhythmic co-ordination and syncopation

• 8th note broken chords

• Melody utilising intervals of a sixth

Composer Tips

• Practise the syncopated rhythms from bar nine onwards by first tapping them out.  

• Play with a light touch and a loose wrist in both hands.

• Make sure to observe the dynamic markings as these add contrast to the melodic repeats.
