The Flying Dutchman tells the story of a cursed sailor – the “Flying Dutchman.” He is condemned to sail the seas forever because he once challenged the devil. Only once every seven years is he allowed to go ashore to find a woman who will remain faithful to him until death – only then can he be redeemed. The Dutchman meets Daland, a Norwegian captain who promises him his daughter Senta. Senta already knows the legend of the Flying Dutchman and feels drawn to him. She swears eternal fidelity to him, even though she is actually engaged to the hunter Erik. When it looks as if Senta is going to break her promise, the Dutchman wants to move on. But Senta throws herself into the sea to prove her loyalty. Her sacrifice redeems the Dutchman – his ship sinks and the two are united in death.
Steuermann lass die Wacht is about the helmsman who cheerfully sings a sailor's song in which he thinks of his beloved at home. He dreams that the south wind will carry him to her. The song is light, dance-like, and almost humorous – a stark contrast to the gloomy mood of the Dutchman, who appears shortly afterwards.
