When trees are overlogged, it results in the destruction of habitats, the erosion of soil, loss of materials needed by humans, and causes the planet to become hotter. The effects of deforestation extend far beyond the forest, harming humans and animals alike across the globe. Life on Earth depends on forests for its survival.
Each of the four movements relates to one of these four impacts of deforestation that are listed above. There are several themes and motifs that musically illustrate each of these impacts.
The audience is given an opportunity to participate using simple forms of body percussion in the third movement. When the piano is not actively playing (either holding notes on a fermata, or when resting), audience members may contribute various sounds that mimic a natural environment. They can: simulate wind noises through blowing with puckered lips, simulate leaves rustling by rubbing hands together, and/or simulate rain drops through snapping fingers.
