History:Deck the Halls is a traditional Welsh Carol and dates back to the sixteenth century, while the English lyrics were written in 1862 by Thomas Oliphant, a Scottish musician.The Twelve Days of Christmas is a traditional English Carol. The origination of this song is unknown, but it is thought to have been based upon a children’s game. Several variations of lyrics and melodies exist before the current well known version which was standardized by composer Frederic Austin. His arrangement was published in 1909. This popular carol is sung all over the world and has been recorded countless times.Performance:The combination of these two Carols produces a wonderful audience pleaser and concert opener. All of the tempo and articulation alterations, such as the free section at m. 42 and “five gold rings” at m. 60, should be exaggerated for a truly fun performance!
