Its lively melody comes from Nos Galan, a 16th-century Welsh winter song, while the familiar English lyrics were penned much later, in 1862, by Scottish musician Thomas Oliphant. They first appeared in Welsh Melodies, a four-volume collection compiled by John Thomas, with Welsh texts by John Jones (Talhaiarn) and English translations by Oliphant.
The tune itself can be traced to a manuscript by Welsh harpist John Parry in the early 1700s. Parry later published it in British Harmony: Being a Collection of Antient Welsh Airs, the Traditional Remains of those Originally Sung by the Bards of Wales. Poet John Ceiriog Hughes also wrote Welsh lyrics for the melody, and over time, folk singers added new verses.
By the 18th century, this cheerful air had spread far beyond Wales. Mozart is said to have woven it into his 18th violin sonata (1778), and Joseph Haydn arranged it under its Welsh title, Nos Galan. Through the centuries, the tune has endured, transformed, and celebrated, becoming one of the most festive songs of Christmastime.
