Composed by Joe Zeitlin. Arranged by Peet du Toit. This edition: pdf. Classical. 1 pages. Peet du Toit #1454092. Published by Peet du Toit (A0.1895673).
This quartet has immediate similarities with The Wanderer (D760). Again, Schubert has taken compositional inspiration from one of his own songs. The sombre melody for the song Death and the Maiden, written in February 1817, here reappears in a new setting as the theme for a set of five variations. As in the fantasia, the variations make up the second movement of the work, and although the melody is not heard elsewhere in the quartet, its rhythmical infuence remains, permeating each of the other three movements.
The work was written in March 1824, and published posthumously in 1831. There is no record of it having been performed in the composer's lifetime, the first documented public performance only taking place in 1833. The title of the quartet is not Schubert's, and was probably a publisher's addition, geared to improving sales by making a reference to the song. The theme of the variations is taken from one of the songs in which Death replies to the Maiden's pleadings.
The melancholy feeling that fills the opening theme of the Andante con moto (II) is not carried through into the music of the following variations, which are optimitic and light. Variation 5 returns to the minor key and the movement ends peacefully with a quiet rendition of the death theme.
Here's your cut thereof to play at the appropriate venue. Enjoy!
