In March of 2020, Benjamin Neal approached me with the idea of arranging Dearly Beloved from the Kingdom Hearts series. Inspired by Kyle Landry’s various renditions of the piece, he was interested in an arrangement for two percussionists. While I wasn’t fully aware of quite how much time I was about to have available to me to work on this (thanks to the impending COVID-19 pandemic), I was excited about the prospect and eagerly agreed to work on it. We decided to arrange it for vibraphone and 5-octave marimba, aiming to produce a work that could make a fine addition to his graduate recital.
Using Landry’s rhapsodic interpretations as a starting block, my hopes in arranging this piece were to take full advantage of the beautiful resonance of the vibraphone and marimba, while processing the material through improvisational exploration. The arrangement begins with a relatively straightforward presentation of the Dearly Beloved melody, with limited embellishments. From there, the perspective shifts as the arrangement becomes more active and the original melody is reconstructed and textured via arpeggiated figurations idiomatic to four-mallet keyboard percussion technique. The third section of this arrangement climbs to the climax of the work via rhapsodic, scalar passages that pass between the two instruments, sharing the melody between them. The music decelerates; and after a moment of reflection, the piece ends with a final statement of the original melody.
This piece is an advanced-level work, arranged with graduate-level performance in mind. It uses the entire range of both the marimba and the vibraphone, so mallets chosen by the performers should speak appropriately in all registers of the instrument.
