By Benny Goodman. By Bix Beiderbecke. Arranged by Peter Stöve. This edition: pdf. 20th Century, Big Band, Jazz, Swing. 42 pages. Peter Stove #1402480. Published by Peter Stove (A0.1842931).Peter Stöve ‘What If Benny Goodman…’ series, Vol. 6! (A take-off on events that could have happened with the Benny Goodman Orchestra’s book of arrangements if things in jazz history had taken another turn).
What if Benny Goodman had asked Joe Lippman in 1934 to arrange “Davenport Blues,” a composition by Bix Beiderbecke, for the orchestra that Benny had put together for the broadcasts of the program “Let's Dance”? Lippman was the pianist in that orchestra. What's more, Benny had known Bix, who died in 1931, well, and had recorded ‘Davenport Blues’ with Adrian Rollini's orchestra. It didn't happen; Lippman later made an arrangement of the composition for trumpeter Bunny Berigan, who recorded it in 1938, along with two other Beiderbecke songs.
‘Davenport Blues’ is presented here as a piece that could have been a cornerstone of the Goodman band library. This version is based on ideas from two sources. The intro is taken from the 1938 band version by Bunny Berigan. The tempo and atmosphere are also derived from Berigan's recording. However, most of the arrangement is an orchestration of the piano transcription that arranger Bill Challis made in 1925 of the piano version played by Bix.
Scored for the line-up of the Benny Goodman Orchestra of 1935: solo clt/2 as/2 ts/3 tpt/2 trb/rhy. Tpt 1 to Bb2. The clarinet soloist must be a first-class ‘BG-wannabe’: fluent soloist, comfortable in the upper register. If your band has such a player: have fun!
