In the dialogic connection between music and text, “The Signal” offers a deeply moving experience. The composition is based on poems from Rose Ausländer's collection “I Hear the Heart of the Oleander” (1977–79, 1984). They are interwoven with the music to create a complete work of art. The approximately nine-minute work can be performed in various event formats, such as performances, concerts, readings, memorial services, and church services. Divided into five sections by the poems, individual sections can be extracted, or pauses or other dramatic elements can be inserted between sections, depending on the occasion. A professionally trained speaking voice is optional; the text can also be read by laypersons. The organ should have at least two manuals and a pedal, and registration is possible without the need for a composer or assistant.
