The four-movement Legend for solo voice, choir and orchestra, based on the text by Jaroslav Vrchlicky, was completed in spring 1914. Vrchlicky's poem depicts the vision of a medieval monk, Joachim de Fiore, in which an angel foretells the inception of a realm of love. At the outset of the First World War, Janacek created his music gospel about universal love, freedom and dignity. The critical edition was prepared as part of the complete edition of works by Leos Janacek by L. Faltus and M. Stedron.
