By Manuel de Falla. By Manuel de Falla. Arranged by Daniel Duarte. This edition: pdf, streaming. Classical. 57 pages. Daniel Duarte, DM #1448095. Published by Daniel Duarte, DM (A0.1889453).Manuel de Falla was the defining figure of 20th century Spanish music. Over the course of his career, he explored the core concerns of modernist aesthetics, including nationalism, neo-classicism, and the role of tonality, all from a highly personal perspective. Like many of his Spanish contemporaries, Falla felt a strong pull toward French culture. His deep admiration for the music of Claude Debussy led to friction in his home country, where conservative critics often attacked his work for being too influenced by foreign styles. The reception of his music frequently shifted alongside the intense political upheavals of Spain, particularly during the Spanish Civil War. Falla eventually moved to Argentina, where he remained until his death in 1946.
The Danza ritual del fuego (Ritual Fire Dance) is the most celebrated movement from Manuel de Falla’s ballet El amor brujo, a work designed to bridge the gap between formal art music and the raw spirit of traditional Gypsy music. In its original production, the music was brought to life by the singer Pastora Imperio, a Gypsy performer whose natural mastery of Falla's complex rhythms deeply impressed the composer.
Despite its current fame, the piece was born out of a period of significant controversy. While some contemporary critics praised Falla’s brilliant orchestral color and his use of Impressionist techniques, others were less kind. Conservative voices in Spain, driven by a spirit of isolationism, attacked the work for failing to sound "truly Spanish." They argued that Falla’s "obsession" with modern French influences and foreign styles diluted the national identity of the music. Falla eventually made substantial revisions to the score to reach the version known and performed today.
