Composed by Jeffrey Ouper. 20th Century,Contemporary,Halloween,Romantic Period,World. 40 pages. Jeffrey Ouper #44009. Published by Jeffrey Ouper (A0.866198).Originally written for clarinet quartet, Dancing Devil is a scherzo (and also similar to a tarantella) for clarinet choir. A bass clarinet & contrabass clarinet parts were added to the original quartet and an optional alto clarinet part is included for the 4th clarinet part. Two contra parts are included in E-flat and B-flat and the piece works with both or one contra. The piece features a whirling motive that is passed around the clarinets. The title refers to a "Dust Devil," or a type of tornado of dirt found in the southwestern United States, but listeners could also imagine the kind of devil that is red, has a tail, horns, and a pitchfork! The piece is roughly 2:30 minutes.
