Saxophone quartet transcription by Florent Louman
Founded in 2015, the Zahir Quartet aims to evolve the saxophone quartet genre. Whether interpreting original repertoire or transcribing chamber music for their formation, the four saxophonists of the quartet demonstrate their curiosity and creativity.
Composed in 1953, Dances in the Canebrakes is the last completed work by Florence Price, the first African-American composer to have one of her works performed by a major American symphony orchestra. Originally written for piano, the suite was orchestrated shortly afterwards by William Grant Still.
The three dances (Nimble Feet, Tropical Noon and Silk Hat and Walking Cane) elegantly blend the syncopated rhythms of ragtime with the lyrical harmonies inherited from Romanticism. They showcase Price?s refined and deeply expressive style, drawing on both the European classical tradition and popular African-American idioms.
In this version for saxophone quartet, the warm and contrasting timbres of the saxophone family will highlight the work?s harmonic and rhythmic richness, whilst lending it a new colour that is at once supple, dance-like and shimmering.
