In 1911, 25 years before the Gershwin brothers introduced the world to Porgy and Bess, the King of Ragtime wrote Treemonisha, the very first all-black opera. Although Scott Joplin’s work has been called a “ragtime opera” by modern scholars, the composer himself never referred to it that way. Indeed, Treemonisha is written in the style of late 19th-century opera and hints of Wagner, Verdi, and other European composers can be heard throughout. Only in his dance numbers does Joplin make use of ragtime cliches. The themes of feminism and racial empowerment that pervade the opera are just as topical now as they were a century ago. Treemonisha is a moving and compelling work that deserves to be a part of the classical canon. Treemonisha is a piece of American and African-American culture that is long overdue for celebration.
