The story itself is based on a novel of intrigue and drama by Victor Hugo. This particular ballet music forms the major part of the times of the day (twilight, morning, evening, etc.) which serve as a metaphor for the differences between good and evil. Later in the movie "fantasia," this rather dark quality was eliminated and featured a dancing hippo and crocodile in a comedic dance. It is appears here as a short piano solo.
