He almost succeeds by playing his lyre and calming the guardian spirits there, and they let the couple return to earthly life again, but on condition that Orpheus must not look back at Euridice until they reach their destination. She doesn't understand why he won't do so, and her desperate pleas for him to look at her cause him to fail, and he loses her forever...
