Der tägliche Einsatz des Übematerials war um 1900 ein völlige Neuerung gegenüber den bis dahin gebräuchlichen Studien. August Wassiljewitsch Johanson (1853 - 1916) studierte bis 1871 am Konservatorium in St. Petersburg, u. a. bei Wilhelm Wurm. Er sammelte seine Orchestererfahrung als Solokornettist in den Kaiserlichen Theaterorchestern und war als erfolgreicher Professor am Konservatorium tätig.
