Written by Carl Perkins for fellow country icon Johnny Cash in 1967, “Daddy Sang Bass” is an uplifting classic country tune that borrows the chorus from the early 20th century American hymn “Will the Circle Be Unbroken.” This arrangement for brass quintet takes significant inspiration from the version of the song in “The Songs of Johnny & June,” a biographical stage show with musical arrangements by Melissa MacKenzie, and combines it with a Dixieland brass style reminiscent of classic Canadian Brass jazz arrangements by Luther Henderson.
Known for featuring Johnny Cash’s distinct low register, “Daddy Sang Bass” is reimagined here as “Daddy Played Tuba”, and functions as a fun tuba spotlight number, while also giving all the other instruments opportunities to shine.
