Marie-Juliette Boulanger (1893–1918), professionally known as Lili Boulanger, was a French composer and musician who was the first female winner of the Grand Prix de Rome composition prize. Her older sister was the noted composer and composition teacher Nadia Boulanger; their father was the composer Ernest Boulanger. While much of Boulanger’s music reflects the feelings of solitude and alienation beginning to emerge during the twentieth century, it also reveals her own struggles with depression and loneliness caused by her long-term illness. 'D'un Jardin Clair' is the second of three pieces for solo piano, translated as 'Of A Garden Bright' - the harmonic language is Impressionistic, but towards the end comes the call of a cuckoo to root us back in nature. This arrangement for concert band changes the key from the original B major to B flat major, making it more accessible and has been arranged as part of an ongoing project to bring more music by women into the worldwide repertoire. #ArrangeMeGoals2023.
