Curlew River---A Parable for Church Performance (Op. 71) is the first of three Church Parables by Benjamin Britten. The work is based on the Japanese Noh play Sumidagawa (Sumida River) of Juro Motomasa (1395--1431), which Britten saw during a visit to Japan and the Far East in early 1956. Beyond the Noh source dramatic material, Britten incorporated elements of Noh treatment of theatrical time into this composition.

This time a publication year has to be added
This edition is subtitled as REHEARSAL SCORE and a libretto (different ISBN number) visually describing the stage itself and the actions of the actors with illustrations. The copy vividly describes how exciting the performance was. I recommend buying a performance CD to fully enjoy Britten's masterpiece.I ordered the copy after checking the music library in Tokyo where two versions were held (publication years 1965 and 1983), the former being the first edition and the latter the revised version with orchestral part score. With the Sheet Music not designating the publication date (mine is actually a 1997 edition), I wrongly assumed that I was buying the 1983 version. By checking the three versions, I found that probably because the second edition (1983) contained so many mistakes (the version was accompanied by a two-sheet errata for about 40 mistakes), the 1997 edition I purchased is an exact copy (probably photographic) of the first edition.
