Amanda Shires had been keeping a running tally while touring — artist after artist, nearly all male — and eventually called Brandi Carlile, whom she’d never met, to do something about it. They named the group after the all-male outlaw supergroup The Highwaymen. Natalie Hemby — not yet officially a member — wrote “Crowded Table” with Lori McKenna specifically for the project, walking into the session with just the title and the opening chorus line. The song fell out in roughly thirty minutes, Hemby and McKenna finishing each other’s sentences as the verses took shape. When Carlile heard the demo, she recognized it immediately as the band’s sonic identity — four voices in unison, no one competing, everyone belonging. The song won the Grammy for Best Country Song and the Americana Music Association Song of the Year in 2020. This TTBB arrangement is scored as an ensemble feature: open-armed, soulful, and built for exactly the kind of chorus that understands what the lyric is saying.
