The song accompanies the story of the nativity according to Matthew, the lullaby sound of the pieces reflects a mothers sorrow after Herod orders the killing of all new born sons. This arrangement for TTB choir is ideal for small chamber groups as well as larger ensembles. The open harmonies are in keeping with the plain song style of the music.
