The Coventry Carol is a hauntingly beautiful English carol that reaches back to the 16th century. First performed in Coventry as part of The Pageant of the Shearmen and Tailors, it was woven into a mystery play retelling the Nativity story from the Gospel of Matthew. Within the drama, the carol emerges as a tender yet sorrowful lullaby, sung by mothers to their doomed children in the wake of King Herod’s order to slay all the infant boys of Bethlehem. The music itself carries both poignancy and grace, its melancholy lines unexpectedly closing with the brightness of a Picardy third. Though the carol’s author remains unknown, its words were first preserved in 1534 by Robert Croo, with the earliest surviving melody dating from 1591. Over the centuries, its timeless resonance has inspired new settings by modern composers, including Kenneth Leighton, Philip Stopford, and Michael McGlynn, each adding their own voice to this enduring lament of grief and faith. This arrangement is for a flute quartet.
