That stage work, with its patriotic message, based on Adam Mickiewicz’s epic poem, is among Żeleński’s greatest compositional achievements. The third act portrays a colourful feast, during which – besides a ballet – we find a number of ballads and songs. They include a Wooing Scene, written in a rather unusual 8/8 metre, which will enhance the repertoire of every violinist.
