Killer Joe is a hard bop jazz standard composed in 1977 by Benny Golson. The bass line drives the tune and must be at an equal volume with the melodic parts. Some directors may prefer to use one electric bass in place of the entire acoustic bass section. Students will need to learn the concept of swinging the eight notes as noted at the top of the score. Ranges are comfortable and mostly in first position allowing for younger players to manage this nicely. A Violin III Substitute for Viola part is included.The piano and drums parts are optional but will add greatly to the jazz flavor.
